A man driving a stolen pickup injured three women when he intentionally drove through the porch of a home in Adair County, but he wound up in the hospital after one of the victims shot him, state police said.
Phillip D. Cape, 60, was at the home of Marcine Melson, 60, on Melson Ridge Road when he rammed the 1999 Ford pickup through the porch about 3:15 p.m. Sunday. Melson; Irene Firkin, 63; and Brandy Lawless, 30, were all injured, state police said.
After being hit by the truck, Melson got a shotgun and fired a round at the pickup, hitting Cape.
Cape drove off the road and into a field, where police found him. He was taken by helicopter to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition late Monday afternoon.
Melson, Firkin and Lawless were taken to Westlake Hospital in Adair County with injuries that weren't life-threatening, state police said.
Cape, who lives in the Melson Ridge area, has been charged with receiving stolen property over $10,000, driving under the influence, resisting arrest, menacing and driving on a suspended license.
State police said they expect more charges to be filed against Cape.
Trooper Billy Gregory said he did not know whether Melson will be charged in with the shooting.
He said Cape was having "a relationship issue" with one of the women.
